Copyright is a very beneficial way of protecting your work,
and the way to do it is very simple:
Type up in your word processor the details of your book e.g.
'Steph. Anderson holds the Copyright & Intellectual Property of the
book entitled 'Daylight in the Dark' as from 15th April 2019.
Address the letter to yourself; send it Recorded Delivery by Royal Mail
to post it to you in due course, and when you receive it through
the post do not open it until (which is not likely to happen) there
is an argument with another party.
Because you have sent your letter Recorded Delivery the Royal Mail
will have date stamped your letter and (if) an argument ensues with some
one, then you have the evidence that you hold copyright before s/he developed the
same product / book / invention or service.
Because the date on the recorded delivery date is before the other party announced
that they (but don't) hold copyright!
